Screw you, Hobby Lobby.

No matter how I rearranged those words, nothing about them gave me hope.

(Further antics helped cheer me up a bit, though. Man you can tell he works nights.)

Free Comic Book Day is May 5th!

The 1st Saturday of May is Free Comic Book Day! This year that is May 5th.

I love freebies AND I love comic books. I don’t understand people who are snobs when it comes to helping reluctant readers find the joy in reading; if it takes a Star Wars Clone Wars comic book, then may the force be with you, dammit!

Find area stores participating in Free Comic Book Day.

Comic shops are a bit of Americana that, like drive-in theaters, I hope never go out of business. Don’t forget to look around while you’re there. ;)

Check out the Free Comic Book Day Gold & Silver comics for 2012, so your kids have an idea what they want before they get there & aren’t overwhelmed by the selection. Be warned, Free Comic Book Day is on a first-come, first-served basis & some titles go very quickly.

May Baskets

Phew. I forgot it was May Day until 10:40pm. We made & decorated May baskets, cut & arranged flowers, & delivered the baskets to immediate neighbors & Great-Gramma in under an hour.

My kids would not make good ninjas. I’m surprised we weren’t reported as prowlers.

NINJAS DON’T GIGGLE!

Our May baskets were made out of 1 sheet of standard paper. It took me a long time not to staple the handle onto each side of the cone. That makes it hard to hang up, when it’s full of flowers. This handle is perfect! (Patent pending)

When I was little, my mama would make the cone baskets out of newspaper. The year we bought the house I grew up in, we delivered May baskets to our neighbors. Two of our elderly neighbors said they had hoped we would, when we bought the house. Both of these neighbors have since passed on & I’m glad for the memories of their happy faces when they asked the kids about the baskets later.

These May baskets fall under my philosophy that sure, we could make them fancier & more uniform & out of elaborate supplies, but would they get done? If simple means they actually get hung on the neighbor’s doors, they’re PERFECT!

Happy May Day!

(And if my boss calls, asking if the gigantic snowball bush outside our library looks a little less fluffy. Tell her you think it was ninjas. Giggling ninjas.)

Get in the car! It’s National Parks Week.

National Park Week is April 21st-29th and many of our National Parks are waiving their entrance fees. Get in the car!

The national parks preserve wild life (LOC)
Even if you aren’t within driving distance of Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, there are 100s of smaller National Parks that make a wonderful day trip.

April 28th is Junior Ranger Day. We are BIG fans of the Junior Ranger program, which is a free service available in most parks that have a ranger on hand. Most commonly, kids will be given a fun worksheet or pamphlet which directs learning around the park. After it is signed off by the ranger, kids get their own Junior Ranger badge specific to each park. These are a wonderful souvenir to collect on your travels.

Find a park participating in the Free Entrance Day promotion near you.

The next free entrance day will be June 9th.

Picnic anyone?
